Bass Strait has been Australia's premier oil and gas production area for more than 30 years, supplying more than three billion barrels of oil and over three trillion cubic feet of gas. These fields are operated via off shore platforms. To date, there have been remarkably few incidents. A serious oil spill in 1999 was from a ship and had nothing to do with the oil and gas operations.
